Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is used for patients who experience extreme anxiety during visits, or during very serious procedures. A lot of people have fear about going to the dentist, so sedation can make that experience a little bit more manageable. Sedation dentistry allows you to stay awake, while deeply relaxed, during procedures. This means you will still be able to follow directions from the dentist, and it will put you at ease during the appointment. Due to the length of some procedures, your dentist may still suggest the use of sedatives. The alternative, general anesthesia, puts patients to sleep during dental procedures.
Types of Sedation:
Oral sedatives – your dentist will provide a pill or liquid for you to consume. You will remain awake but not nervous about the procedure.
Laughing Gas – Otherwise called nitrous oxide, laughing gas allows you to stay fully conscious but more relaxed
IV Sedation – sedation is deeper because it is injected directly into the vein. You will remain awake, but not aware of the procedure.
General Anesthesia – This will cause you to be asleep during the procedure, and likely leave you feeling groggy after the procedure.
