Though a little on the smaller side than some of the other hamlets on Long Island, Stony Brook has a lot going on. The hamlet only had a population of approximately 13,000 people in the 2010 census. The hamlet was originally founded at some time in the latter years of the 1600s after the land on which it was built was purchased from its previous owners, the Setalcott people. In fact, it originally kept its old Native American name of Wopowog in the early years of its founding; it was only in later years that it was changed to the current name of Stony Brook.
